Obituary for Peter Samborski

Peter Samborski
Peter Samborski was born in Cudworth, Saskatchewan on April 7, 1934. Beloved son of Nicholas (predeceased 1972) and Jennie Samborski (predeceased 2013) and oldest brother of Morris (Claire), Annie (Philip Dalle Vedove - predeceased 2014) and Gloria (Vladimir Berens).

A lifelong bachelor, Uncle Peter considered his nieces and nephews as his children. He leaves behind Karen (Mike Riopel), Kevin Eaton, Derek (Lise) and Jason (Kelly) Samborski; Debbie (Richard Preyde), Laura, Danny and Phillip (Christina) Dalle Vedove and Monika (Colin Firth), Katherine, Carla, Rainer (Noreen) and David (Nathalie) Berens.

He was a “Great” Uncle Peter to many great nieces and nephews. He is also remembered by his uncles, aunts, cousins, Rockview Tower neighbours, and so many friends.

When he moved to Sudbury in 1942 with his family to start a new life, his mother ensured that he and his siblings became a part of St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church. His belief in God, his Church, and his Ukrainian community were so important to him, and he lovingly shared those beliefs with his family at every opportunity.

Peter started his work history first at Canada Post, Silverman’s, and then as school teacher in Little Current before becoming the North’s first social worker responsible for everyone who needed help north of Barrie. He kept close friendships with so many of the people he worked with over the years.

He enjoyed spending many summers at the chalet in Moonstone, gardening, travelling the world, reading, antique and art collecting, yard sale-ing, listening to music, and playing Scrabble and card games. He wrote many beautiful poems and was a master storyteller - especially scary stories, and he loved telling jokes.

Peter was an active member of St. Mary’s Ukrainian Church for over eight decades. He was a member of parish council and the church choir. He also volunteered at the Ukrainian Seniors’ Centre where his mother lived for many years. He supported so many local and international charities throughout his life, always wanting to help others. Peter will be remembered for his ability to talk to anyone and make them smile. His family especially will miss his genuine and generous laughter.

Many special thanks to the nurses and PSWs of the 6th Floor (South Tower) at HSN for their compassion and the connection they made with Peter. They made Peter’s last weeks so much easier for both him and his family.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, January 20, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, 40 Notre Dame Avenue. A luncheon will follow. Donations to St. Mary’s Church or the Ukrainian Seniors’ Centre would be greatly appreciated.
